As the excitement has been building for an official announcement of the next GTA 6, one burning question is on every GTA noob’s mind: Will GTA 6 be a 200 GB game? Well, it looks like the game may deliver on that and more; if recent leaks are anything to go by, it’s almost 200 GB. However, this will specify some Xbox Series S players because of the small storage space available on the console.

GTA 6 File Size Rumors and Speculations
Excitement builds as leaks suggest GTA 6 could reach nearly 200 GB in file size. Fans eagerly await more details from Rockstar Games.

The Growing Size of Modern Video Games

Given the growing file sizes of modern games, this raises the question: just how big could GTA 6 be? The Grand Theft Auto sequel, which is due to arrive in Fall 2025 for current-gen consoles, has no officially confirmed announcement surrounding its file size. Which hasn’t prevented the rumors or recycled speculation from spreading like welcome wildfire.

Summary of GTA 6 File Size Rumors and Speculations

One of the early rumors about how big GTA 6 would be was from X (formerly Twitter) user @GTAVInewz, who shared what seems to be a screenshot from an unidentified source that suggested it could take up to as much space as 750GB. The number raised more than a few eyebrows, as it promptly exceeded the storage capacities of the base PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. To others, this rumor sounded a bit ridiculous.

In a slightly more believable February 2024 leak, X user @GTAVIbestleaks hummed that GTA 6 might top out at over 300 GB. That was somewhat believable considering the vast open world and activities within the game. However, most players were suspicious as to whether this number would ultimately end up being correct.

What Players Are Expecting Now

This is compared to more recent fan estimates that have been in the ballpark of 200 GB for GTA 6. And that number is holding water, as more leaks and rumors surface. This has led to comparisons with other flagship titles such as the above-mentioned Call of Duty Black Ops 6, which is believed to weigh in at around 300 GB. Regardless, Rockstar Games has a reputation for optimizing its games, and many fans expect the game to clock in at under 200 GB.

As a rough comparison, the PS5 version of GTA 5 (Expanded and Enhanced) with all online content installed is 95.945GB, while the system-heavy open-world Rockstar title Red Dead Redemption 2 is just over 100GB. So these comparisons may indicate that GTA 6 will unlikely hit over 200 GB of file size, but until any official announcement is made, there’s still very much speculation.
