We know Rockstar Games as the developer behind the Grand Theft Auto (GTA) and Red Dead Redemption franchises, which are unquestionably some of the most captivating open-world stories out there. The masterful execution of GTA V, with a variety of reasons to own it on multiple platforms, and GTA Online continuing to be relevant nearly a decade after launch mean people are rightfully excited for the next iteration in the series GTA 6. But why is it taking so long?

Why GTA 6 is delayed: Rockstar Games' meticulous development and ongoing projects explained.
Rockstar Games takes its time with GTA 6 development, focusing on quality, updates to GTA Online, and the success of Red Dead Redemption 2.

Meticulous Development Process

However, as per Mike York, who has been working very closely with Rockstar Games on past titles like GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2 (RDR2), two main things have led to delays. For one, we know that Rockstar will just put resources towards what sells; secondly, this is a company obsessed with putting out some of the most high-end PC versions available. Just the care that needs to be put into creating the PC version is laborious, detail-oriented work.

This commitment to quality isn’t restricted to the PC port. While Rockstar is especially known for making deep, sprawling worlds that take years to create. Rather than put a release date on it or announce pre-orders well ahead of time, the company prefers to take its time and make sure its game lives up to scrutiny from an expectedly demanding audience.

Rockstar’s Ongoing Projects

Of course, one of the biggest reasons why GTA 6 remains even further down the line is because, well, Rockstar has an entire multiplayer service that needs support. Rockstar has been working overtime to keep the online portion fresh with a stream of new content. The report is already been in this year, apparently due to the success of Red Dead Redemption 2 in October 2018 – and it’s not hard to see why a new GTA game would be very welcome.

The wait has been a long one, however, close to 10 years since Grand Theft Auto V came out which is not unexpected. Rockstar is no company in the business of fast work and looks like they are ensuring that GTA 6 will be something truly to remember.

The Road to GTA 6

The mere announcement of GTA 6 has got fans excited, even though it is going to be a few more years before the game comes in retail stores. Though the trailers shared so far give us a peek at what seems to be Vice City, as well as two new protagonists, Lucia and Jason. That world, in a neon-drenched Rockstar style with its unmistakable attention to detail, has added to the excitement.

It has been quite the wait, not unexpectedly close to 10 years since the release of Grand Theft Auto V (O_O). Another thought is that Rockstar has probably been in secret development for a new story and making sure that the game world goes above and beyond anything they have ever done.

GTA 6 is taking as long as it is because Rockstar Games has been busy doing what they do: creating a groundbreaking game.
