The release of Grand Theft Auto VI (GTA 6) has been on the lips of gamers for some time now, and this time it might be different. Today, after years of speculation, leaks, and insider reports, we get to know when players are more or less likely to get access to the game. For how long, though? GTA 6 is the most anticipated game of 2025.
A Release Date in 2025?
Rockstar Games’ parent company, Take-Two Interactive, recently made it official when they released an SEC filing listing GTA 6 for a fall 2025 release. The writing was on the wall, as earlier rumors claiming the game could be pushed back to 2026 were finally put to bed by Insider Gaming.
While this new confirmation should inspire confidence among fans everywhere, the gaming industry is notorious for delays right before launch, so it pays to be somewhat optimistic. Former Rockstar Games technical director Obi Vermage claims that the final release date cannot be set until at least four months before the planned launch. That means if any changes are to be made, they could come around 2025, or as early as mid-decade.
Will There Be a Delay?
Game delays happen all the time, and GTA 6 has been subject to postponement rumors like no other. Vermage noted that such decisions are often made at the last minute and pointed to a situation that arose during the development of GTA IV. There was only a four-month delay before the game came out.
Few games are more closely watched than the next Grand Theft Auto, and with so much riding on it, don’t expect GTA 6 from Rockstar Games unless they’re sure it lives up to their ridiculously high standards. It fulfills. … They won’t release the game until they’re happy themselves. Vermeij (“Whatever the trailer said, yes.”) is hardly surprising given the title’s size and the enormous expectations placed on its shoulders by both Take-Two Interactive fans and shareholders.
The Pressure on Rockstar Games
So there is a ton of hype surrounding GTA 6. That can be a lot to live up to, especially considering the origin of one of the best-selling video game franchises in gaming history. Only to add fuel to the fire is the infamous 2022 leak in which unrelenting footage of the game leaked onto the internet, giving us an idea of where GTA 6 was before its straight-out alpha phase. While that trailer is worthwhile, the game was announced in December 2023 with just one trailer, and Rockstar has kept itself famously quiet about the game since then. It is the most viewed video in YouTube history, with 210 million views for the trailer.
While Rockstar Games figures them out, Take-Two Interactive bleeds the clock, managing investor expectations so that the final release doesn’t wipe out their stock price. TechCrunch expects the company to continue to tweak how this story is told as we get closer to that ~already missed~ launch date.
Platform Availability
As of the time of writing, Rockstar has only announced GTA 6 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. While there are rumors that it could also be released on future consoles like the PlayStation 5 Pro or Nintendo Switch 2, nothing official has been revealed on that front yet.
